Coalition Sustainment: How to Keep Your Coalition From Falling Apart When Your Grant Funding Ends….
This course is open to US military, prevention and substance abuse treatment professionals.
Adapted from the University of Kansas’ Work Group for Community Health and Development’s Building Capacity for Collaborative Action Training Curriculum, this one day training provides an evidence based, in-depth look into sustaining the coalition.
Sustaining the work is one of the core competencies for competencies for effective substance abuse coalitions. Those of us working to promote community health and development understand that, in most cases, the results we hope to achieve will occur a long way down the road. There will be short-term successes and outcomes, to be sure, but real results, actual improvement in community outcomes is something we have to work for and wait for. Staying with the work requires faith, patience and persistence. Planning and acting for the future help ensure that human and financial resources are available long enough to make a difference.

About the Training Curriculum
The KU Work Group has developed a training curriculum based on the Community Tool Box that outlines 16 competencies for promoting community health and development. These competencies include: creating and maintaining coalitions and partnerships, assessing community needs and resources, analyzing problems and goals, developing a framework or model of change, developing strategic and action plans, building leadership, developing an intervention, increasing participation and membership, enhancing cultural competence, advocating for change, influencing policy development, evaluating the initiative, implementing a social marketing campaign, writing a grant application for funding, improving organizational management and development, and sustaining the project or initiative. Each of these 16 field-tested modules feature participant guides, adaptable facilitator guides, and PowerPoint slides.
